A huge thank you to Scouts Ambassaor, Tim Peake for opening The Barn – the new home for 5th Haywards Heath Scouts. The community hub was made possible thanks to some incredibly hard work from volunteers, young people and the local community. Well done team!

Awards

The Scout Association has a number of Award schemes.

Long service awards are issued automatically, based on length of service starting at 5 years and increasing in years up to 30 years and thereafter in 10 year steps.

There is also the Good Service award scheme, including Chief Scout Commendation, Award for Merit, Bar to the Award, S.ilver Acorn and Bar to the Silver Acorn. There are length of service requirements for each award but any member of the Association can make a nomination. Full details on how to make a nomination can be found on the Awards guide

County Roadshow

It was fantastic to welcome Joe Rogerson (County Lead Volunteer) and Julia Kielstra (Deputy County Lead Volunteer) to Mid Sussex District Scouts last night as part of their County Scouts roadshow!

Leaders from across the district gathered at the Redwood for a really engaging evening, hearing about their vision for the future of West Sussex Scouts. It was a brilliant opportunity to learn more about the direction of travel for Scouts across the county, ask questions, and share ideas about how we continue to grow and deliver amazing opportunities for young people.

A big thank you to Joe and Julia for taking the time to visit us and for such an open and inspiring discussion. We’re excited about the journey ahead and proud to be part of shaping the future of West Sussex Scouts together!

Transformation – an update

Most groups have made the transition to Trustee boards at their latest AGM. The next phase – from Compass to a fully digital system is in the final testing phase, with a Compass freeze from 7th November with a Go Live from 28th November. Please check you Compass record prior to the freeze.

Looking for a meeting place

Our District Headquarters, next to Clair Hall in Perrymount Road, Haywards Heath, RH16 3DN is available to hire for children’s parties as well as seminars and meetings when we are not using it. The main hall room is around 130 square metres in size and overlooks Clair Park to the rear along with a patio and conservatory to the side.

Squirrels are coming

8th Burgess Hill (St Edwards) plans for Squirrels are moving apace. They have contacted parents of Squirrel aged children on their waiting list (ages 4-6) and plan to start with 10 young people and slowly grow as they all settle in. They plan to open the doors on Monday 5th September at 4.30 for the first session.

Training courses are available to book

Training course dates are now published (www.midsussexdistrictscouts.com/district-diary) and can now be booked. courses take place at Lodge hill near Pulborough and are run over the weekend of 15/16th April

District Rifle Shooting competition

Teams from across the District took part in the annual District Rifle Shooting competition on Sunday at 1st Haywards Heath Scout Group.

1st – 1st Hurstpierpoint were the winners scoring 605 points with runners up 1st Hassocks on 495 points

The remainder of the top ten was:

3rd – 10th Haywards Heath – Whirlwinds – 459

4th – 10th Haywards Heath – Tornadoes – 359

5th – 1st Burgess Hill – Rowallan – 348

6th – 8th Burgess Hill – 316

7th – 7th Burgess Hill – 205

8th – 1st Burgess Hill – Walsh – 196

9th – 1st Haywards Heath – 191

10th – 5th Haywards Heath – 189

The top 4 scorers from Hurstpierpoint, 10th Haywards Heath and Hassocks will represent Mid Sussex District at the County competition at Chichester on Sunday 12th March

Icelandic Expedition

43 Explorers and 6 Leaders from Mid Sussex Explorer Scout Units are on an action packed week in Iceland. Horse Riding, Geyser Watching and experiencing the Icelandic climate in February.
